A Fiesta of Memories: Crafting the Vibrant Spirit of Día de Muertos
If there is one thing I love most about paper crafting, it is the magic of taking a few simple sheets of cardstock and turning them into something bursting with heart, memory, and love.
Growing up in California, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by colorful cultural celebrations, but Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) has always held a truly special place in my heart. The moment November arrives, homes and streets fill with glowing candles, brilliant golden marigolds, playful sugar skulls, and music. It is anything but spooky—it is a joyful, warmth-filled family reunion where we honor and celebrate the sweet memories of loved ones who hold a permanent place in our hearts.
If you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to bring this colorful, family-focused celebration into your home, you are in the right place! With your Cricut or Silhouette machine, you can turn colorful paper into radiant home decor, and glowing keepsakes to celebrate family for this festive time of year.
Celebrate Family with a Glowing 3D Mini Ofrenda
At the very heart of Día de Muertos is the ofrenda—a decorative family altar filled with bright marigolds, candles, and treasured photographs. Building an altar is a loving family tradition where stories are shared, laughter is remembered, and generations connect.
I designed my 3D Mini Ofrenda Altar SVG Template to celebrate the life of a beloved pet that my husband and I had recently lost. Sophie was not only a sweet pet, but truly part of our family. Now, you can craft this adorable little ofrenda to honor and remember someone you lost too.

This sweet little paper shadowbox stands 5 inches tall and features delicate cutout doors inspired by traditional Mexican paper art, called Papel Picado. Inside, there is a holder for a standard LED tealight candle that casts a soft, comforting glow over a photo of a cherished relative, friend, or beloved pet.
Whether you set it on your mantle, desk, or family dining table, assembling this tiny altar is a peaceful, heartfelt project. And if 3D paper structures ever make you feel a little nervous, take a deep breath—I've got you covered!
Every piece is pre-grouped on a single workspace using my signature Master Canvas layout, so you can visualize the whole project, resize everything with one click, and send it to your cutting machine without any frustrating guesswork.

Bring Big Color & Joy to Your Craft Room
Día de Muertos is a grand feast for the eyes, where every bright hue carries a sense of hope and celebration:
Yellow & Orange:
Represent the warm sunshine and bright marigold petals (cempasúchil) guiding loving memories home.
Pink & White:
Symbolize purity, joy, and the sweetness of life.
Purple:
Represents loving remembrance and peaceful honor.
You can mix and match your favorite textured cardstock colors to build an entire fiesta in your crafting space!
